Restorative Pediatric Dentistry in South Jersey
At Tooth Patrol Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that baby teeth don’t always follow the expected timeline. Whether due to injury, decay, or infection, early tooth loss can impact more than just your child’s smile, it can affect how they eat, speak, and how their adult teeth grow in. When a baby tooth is lost too early, we offer supportive, preventive solutions to keep your child’s smile on track. Our board-certified pediatric dentists in Moorestown and Cherry Hill provide expert care to guide natural development and reduce the risk of future complications.
Early tooth loss occurs when a baby tooth falls out or needs to be removed before its natural time, often years before the permanent tooth underneath is ready to come in. This can happen due to dental trauma, advanced decay, gum disease, or medical conditions.
Baby teeth serve as important space holders for adult teeth, and losing them too soon can lead to spacing problems, bite issues, or misalignment as neighboring teeth shift. That’s why early intervention is key.
At Tooth Patrol, we take a proactive approach, evaluating your child’s growth and creating a plan to protect their developing smile with the least invasive, most effective care possible.
While every child’s situation is unique, early tooth loss is often linked to:
Dental injuries during play or sports
Cavities that progress to infection or tooth damage
Gum disease or poor oral hygiene habits
Tooth extractions due to extensive decay
Congenital or medical conditions that affect dental development
If your child loses a tooth unexpectedly, we’re here to help with gentle evaluation, clear guidance, and options to support their ongoing oral health.
We first evaluate whether the adult tooth is close to erupting. If it will be delayed, we may recommend a space maintainer to keep nearby teeth from shifting. If the permanent tooth is coming in soon, simple monitoring may be all that’s needed.
Intervention may be recommended if a tooth is lost more than a year early, X-rays show the adult tooth isn’t ready to erupt, nearby teeth are shifting, or your child’s bite, speech, or chewing is affected.
A space maintainer is a small, custom-made appliance that keeps the gap open until the adult tooth is ready to come in. It prevents crowding, misalignment, and the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later.
Low-radiation digital X-rays may be used to determine the position of the incoming adult tooth. This helps us plan whether monitoring or a space maintainer is the best option for your child’s long-term oral development.
Families choose Tooth Patrol for our minimally invasive, evidence-based approach, kid-focused care, custom space-maintainer solutions, and our warm, supportive environment where every child is treated with respect and compassion.
